Job Position: Database Administrator

Location: Lagos

Job Overview

  • Your responsibility as a Database Administrator (DBA) will be the performance, integrity and security of a database.
  • You’ll be involved in the planning and development of the database, as well as in troubleshooting any issues on behalf of the users to ensure that:
    • Data remains consistent across the database
    • Data is clearly defined
    • Users access data concurrently, in a form that suits their needs
    • There is provision for data security and recovery control (ensuring all data is retrievable in an emergency).

Job Responsibilities
As a database administrator, you’ll need to:

  1. Provide guidance and support to Application Developers
  2. Assist with schema design, code review, SQL query tuning
  3. Install, tune, implement and upgrade DBMS installations
  4. Write and deploy SQL patches
  5. Upgrade and improve application schema and data upgrades
  6. Process work accurately and in a timely manner
  7. Pay attention to detail at all times
  8. Proactively and regularly make recommendations for system improvements
  9. Establish the needs of users and monitor user access and security
  10. Monitor performance and manage parameters in order to provide fast responses to front-end users
  11. Map out the conceptual design for a planned database
  12. Consider both back-end organization of data and front-end accessibility for end-users
  13. Refine the logical design so that it can be translated into a specific data model
  14. Further refining the physical design to meet system storage requirements
  15. Install and test new versions of the database management system (DBMS)
  16. Maintain data standards, including adherence to the Data Protection Act
  17. Write database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata)
  18. Control access permissions and privileges
  19. Develop, manage and test back-up and recovery plans
  20. Ensure that storage and archiving procedures are functioning correctly
  21. Carry out capacity planning
  22. Work closely with IT project managers, database programmers and multimedia programmers
  23. Communicate regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security
  24. Commission and install new applications and customize existing applications in order to make them fit for purpose
  25. Manage the security and disaster recovery aspects of a database.

Skills / Requirements / Experience

  1. Candidates should possess a Bachelor’s Degree
  2. Minimum of 3 years experience in similar role.
  3. Ability to work with data architects and other IT specialist to set up, maintain and monitor data networks
  4. Knowledge of database structure languages, such as SQL or SQL/PSM
  5. Experience with server installation and maintenance
  6. Familiarity with database management best practices
  7. Knowledge of IT security best practices
  8. Experience with a variety of computer information systems
  9. Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  10. Good communication, teamwork and negotiation skills
  11. Familiarity with the main data manipulation languages and the principles of database design
  12. Good organizational skills
  13. Business awareness and understanding of business requirements of IT
  14. A willingness to keep up to date with developments in new technology
  15. A commitment to continuing professional development (CPD)
  16. An understanding of information legislation, such as the Data Protection Act.
