  • Job Position: Senior Journalist
  • Job Location: Lagos, Nigeria
  • Contract: 9 months

Job Introduction

  • Gist Nigeria is BBC Africa’s pioneer co-production with a dynamic team that produces stories being talked about for the social media generation.  Gist Nigeria offers in-depth reporting, focusing on the stories behind the news, its impact, and how it affects the audience.  It features analysis, studio discussions, and hard-hitting interviews around the key issues that matter to Nigerians and West Africa.  The program also features stories covered by a selection of the BBC’s African services.
  • We have an opportunity for a Senior Journalist to join the program based in Lagos.  This is an attachment / fixed term contract for nine months.

Job Responsibilities

  • Reporting to the Programme Editor, you will be responsible for an area of output, including editorial control, reporting, selection and compilation of material, production, leading teams, and planning and implementing effective use of resources.
  • Working alongside TV, Social Media, and Multimedia desks, you’ll act as a point of editorial reference for journalists and correspondents, providing editorial leadership as required.
  • You will exercise your editorial judgment, creativity, and flair to make original and compelling multimedia content.
  • You will also offer ideas for daily output and future diary events, suggesting new angles on existing stories and putting forward stories not yet covered.

Job Requirements

  • The successful candidate will have a demonstrable background in a senior journalistic role, with a first-class knowledge of news that appeals to a Nigerian audience. 
  • A broadcast-level of English, written and spoken, is essential. 
  • You will have notable experience of working across multi-platforms including TV, digital, and social media. 
  • Knowledge of creating TV news programs to the highest editorial standards is important. 
  • You will have an in-depth knowledge of news and stories related to the West Africa region, with a full understanding of Nigerian history, politics, social and cultural issues. 
  • A thorough understanding of the latest developments in storytelling is key.
